Iqbal Ashar was born on 26 October 1965 in Kucha Chelan, Delhi, India.

His family roots trace back to Amroha, Western Uttar Pradesh.

For education, he attended Shanta Nursery School, then Ramjas School No.1 (Daryaganj, Delhi) for his early schooling, and later obtained a B.A. (Honours) in Urdu from Zakir Husain Delhi College.

Iqbal Ashar began his public poetic journey in 1998, participating in all-India “mushaira” (poetry symposiums), under the early guidance of late Mauj Rampuri.

Over time, he has been supported and encouraged by several prominent Urdu poets such as Wasim Barelvi, Rahat Indori, Anwar Jalalpuri, Meraj Faizabadi and Munawwar Rana.

His reach extends far beyond Delhi — he has recited poetry across many Indian districts and internationally in countries such as USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Pakistan and more.
